''But for me, a fall wreath wouldn't go on a blue door. ''I mentioned it to friends, and they said, 'You're crazy,' " said Driscoll, who enjoys home decorating. ''People, like, make bets on the color."ĭriscoll can't say when the initial inspiration struck, other than that she knew when she moved to Concord Avenue that the original color, Summer Harvest, would be gone as soon as the leaves changed. ''I think that the town makes a bigger deal out of it than we do," said Meghan Driscoll, 17, who helps her mother decide between Strawberry Crushes and Southhampton Blues. ''The woman said, 'I told my husband it was yellow, and now he doesn't believe me!' " recalled Driscoll's husband, Tom, who answered the door. The wife had fallen in love with the color and had dragged her husband to see it - only to discover that Driscoll had repainted it overnight. Several years ago a couple knocked on the door. Others have left notes on the door thanking Driscoll for brightening their morning commute with a dash of art and smidgeon of surprise. On July 4, she painted her front-stoop flower pots red, white and blue for Christmas, she draped a large, homemade wreath encircled with more than 60 silver, violet, and gold ornamental balls over the center of the door. (She took over the painting duties herself about a year ago.) The door has become so thick with paint, she must hip-check it to get the lock to shut.įanciful bows, wreaths, and Williamsburg fruit arrangements - all Driscoll creations - also grace the doorway throughout the year. 'What color is the door going to be?' " he said. ''It's what everybody asks me when the see me. Sal Crimaldi, Driscoll's longtime house painter, also couldn't avoid questions about Driscoll's door. Concord Avenue could hardly be discussed without mention of ''the door lady." Driscoll's teen-age children couldn't walk into Belmont Center without being asked whether they lived in the house with the front door.

''I paint it on December 1," said Driscoll, who came up with the idea of changing colors every season about six years ago. But as the door continued to change in step with the seasons, the curious began to catch on.īy summer, Driscoll's front door was Belmont Pink. Neighbors and passersby who noticed the changing colors assumed that Driscoll just couldn't decide what color the door should be. Three months after that, she repainted the door red. But three months later, the yellow was gone, brushed over with a deep shade of eggplant.
